Women's Basketball season Preview. After the 23-year-old head coach won her first collegiate game, Lindsay Goldblatt was tempted to take the perfect record and walk into the sunset. "I was going to quit after 1-0," said Goldblatt, laughing. The 18-year-old shooting star may have had 36 points and 13 rebounds in her collegiate debut, but Tiffany Hurd couldn't shake how much tougher it was out there. "It's a lot different than high school," said Hurd, the former Moorpark High star. "I didn't think it would be, but it is. You definitely have to be a lot stronger to play." The two new faces of the Moorpark College women's basketball team, the fresh, young coach and the budding, new star, are symbolic of the new potential at Raider Pavilion. The best sign of the new season wasn't the season-opening success, a 64-46 win over Contra Costa. It was the way the Raiders (2-1) rebounded from a 46-point loss to juggernaut Pasadena last Saturday to beat College of the Desert, 51-41, the next day to finish third in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic. "We're not going to roll over," said Goldblatt. "We're young, so it's nice to see everyone react in that way. We came out strong, we were up by 20 at halftime." Of course, if her team absorbs any of the toughness Goldblatt showed as a Moorpark player from 2002 to 2004, surrender will never be an option. Goldblatt has surrounded herself with players like Liz Kotake, the 5-foot-9 power forward from La Reina she calls "a glue girl." "She does all the behind-the-scenes stuff that's not going to get her any write-ups in the paper," said Goldblatt. "She does the boxing out, the rebounding, she's guarding players bigger than her." Sophomore Kellyn Lees, who Goldblatt labels "the hardest worker on the team by far," is the starting point guard. "She plays all hours of the day to improve," said Goldblatt. Freshman guard Alex Alverez is a defensive stopper. Tedra Clark and Kim Pulido are offensive and defensive options at point guard. Freshman Marissa Romero and Amanda Shukur are shooting guards. Bev Lamphiear, a 5-foot-7 forward, backs up Kotake. Six-foot centers Kyrstin Christ and Devon Guiliani push each other inside, providing size and defensive presence. "We've got a good group of girls," said Goldblatt. "They're all good kids, they all come to work hard every day." But Hurd, recruited by Humboldt State, Chico State and Fresno State, is a special talent. When she didn't go to a four-year school, it sparked a local community college feeding frenzy that included Moorpark's divisional rivals Ventura and Santa Barbara City. "I just came into it knowing that I'm going to have to be a leader on the team," said Hurd. "I came in telling myself that I was going to be a leader." A 5-11 wing with a long wingspan and seemingly limitless range, Hurd's body type, skills and potential impact for Moorpark are reminiscent of Seattle Sonics rookie Kevin Durant. "We're trying to put some muscle on those bones," said Goldblatt. "She's lanky. If she added some muscle, she'd have the perfect (basketball) body." Hurd is averaging 21.3 points and 6.0 rebounds through three games, shooting 80 percent at the foul line. "She works hard and she wants to improve and she wants to get better," said Goldblatt. "As a coach you couldn't' ask for anything more out of her. Hurd has already taken 58 shots, including 32 in her debut. "She'll take it with a hand in her face, she'll take it with someone on her," said Goldblatt. "But she also works really hard on defense." Goldblatt will be mentored by assistant coach Lori Chandler, who coached Goldblatt at El Camino Real High in Woodland Hills. "She's definitely more than just an assistant," said Goldblatt. "She's not afraid to tell me if I should do something different. I love having her around." Along with her twin sister Catie, Goldblatt was a freshman reserve on the most successful Moorpark team in recent memory, the 2002-03 team that went 28-10 and lost in overtime at Los Angeles Valley in a dramatic regional final. As a sophomore, she earned All-WSC North honors by averaging 9.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and leading the conference in free-throw percentage (82.7 percent). She also played shortstop on the Moorpark softball team before walking onto the basketball team at San Diego State. "Lindsay is a terrific role model for our student athletes," said Moorpark athletic director Howard Davis when Goldblatt was hired in April. "She has done what most of our student athletes aspire to do." Said Kotake: "Lindsay's really young. I think she can relate more towards us. She stresses fundamentals and defense and that's what wins games."
