Men's & Womens X- Country

Cross Country at Lou Vasquez Invitational. The Moorpark College Cross Country teams traveled to San Francisco to compete in the Lou Vasquez Invitational at the Golden Gate National Park. The Lou Vasquez course is relatively flat and fast, which proved to be a fun, fast but challenging course. The trip to San Francisco was long but rewarding. Without their third runner, Tess Cook, the Lady Raiders ran to another impressive finish and placed 2nd behind LA Trade Tech. All women improved their season times and a few have improved personal best times. The 1-2 combo from Rebecca Albarran and Brianna Smith finished 2nd and 3rd with season best times of 19:06 and 19:18, respectively. With an impressive cluster finish Sasha Fernandez, Marisol Perez, Brianna Dugas, and Sandra Ruiz finished together for a time difference of 6 seconds, from 22:02 to 22:08. Freshman, Holly Northrup, improved her season time with a finish of 24:38. That's an improvement of 2 minutes! Freshman, Matt Schroeder, was the only male Raider to compete. Matt's run started with an impressive 5:18 mile. He finished with a season best time of 23:30! Good Job Matt! Next up for the Raiders will be the Southern California Preview Meet in Irvine, CA.

Women Finish 3rd at Conference Preview, Men Finish 10th. The Moorpark College Cross Country teams traveled to San Luis Obispo on Friday to compete in the Conference Preview Meet. This meet provides an opportunity for our cross country team to see all 13 teams of the Western State Conference. The women run a 5k which is 3.1 miles and the men run 4 miles. On the women's side, Coach Kephart was confident the women would finish in the top 5 and was setting a team goal for top 3 by the conference meet October 23rd. Scoring for cross country is similar to golf. Each finisher earns a point based on her place. For example, our top runner, Rebecca Albarran finished 4th and earned 4 points for our team. Teams add up their top five finishers and the team with the least amount of points wins! All of the ladies ran their hearts out and the team was ecstatic when they were announced as the 3rd place team!! Glendale had six ladies in the top 10 and scored 26 points. Bakersfield place 2nd with 89 points and Moorpark scored 113 points for their 3rd place finish. There were a total of 93 runners in the race. Right behind Rebecca was sophomore Brianna Smith finishing 5th at 20:18. Close behind was newcomer Tess Cook who ran 22:04 for a 17th place finish. Freshman, Sasha Fernandez had a great race and improved over one minute to finish 40th in a time of 23:18. Seconds behind were Melissa Brooks and Sandra Ruiz who finished 49th and 50th, respectively. Marisol Perez finished 72nd while Ashley Davis improved over one minute to place 78th. The Men's team finished in 10th place behind freshman Corey Farrell (23:38). Corey finished 23rd overall and improved on his time of more than 1:30 from last week! Teammate Sterling Granger finished in a time of 24:14. Both Student Athletes are graduates from Rio Mesa High School and have made a large contribution to this developing men's team.
