Men's Basketball 2007-08 Season Preview. As easy as
1-2-4, the Moorpark College men's basketball team could be a perfect 7-0 today. The 4-3 Raiders have lost by one point to Southwestern, two points to Los Angeles Valley and four points to No. 8 Riverside. "As
(assistant coach) Mick Cady says, we're nine points from being 7-0," said Moorpark coach Remy McCarthy. "We're pleased with where we are." But, as sophomore guard Caise Burris reminded, 7-0 isn't the
Raiders' goal. "We're not talking about almost being 7-0," said the former Simi Valley High shooter. "It's not about that anymore. It's about us getting better so that when conference starts in
January, we'll be ready to go." With only point guard Cameron Nash and quick guard Trevin Johnson returning from last year's team that finished 16-12 and just missed out on a playoff berth after beating Ventura
in the season finale, Moorpark is integrating 12 new faces into its frentic press-and-shoot system. "We're just trying to get to the kids to understand the enormity of what we're asking them," said
McCarthy. "I feel bad for them, because it seems like all Mick and I do is correct them or push them a little harder. "By the look on their faces, they feel like they're going pretty hard." Their
Western State Conference foes can expect them to be going harder come January, when they're further integrated in the system the Raiders used to win 26 games in 2005-06 and reach regional finals in 2005 and 2006.
"I really feel like the kids are going to come around," said McCarthy. "We're optimistic, but I've learned not to prognosticate in this business." Through seven games, 11 Raiders have both scored
in double figures and are averaging more than five points per game. Burris, who sat out last season after hitting 77 3-pointers as a freshman in 2005-06, leads the team at 12.7 points per game. But McCarthy expects
that to improve as he shakes off the cobwebs from his year away. "I think he's probably pressing the issue," said McCarthy, "but that's to be expected of a guy that's really competitive and anxious to
help the team." McCarthy has yet another backcourt diamond from Sylmar High in Dwight Jones. The freshman point guard is averaging 11.3 points and a team-high 3.7 assists. "We think Dwight's got a real
bright future," said McCarthy. "But it's a very difficult transition for kids to come in from high school (and play this system), particularly when you've had a lot of success. "The mental transition
is every bit as difficult as the physical transition." The Raiders are a little more physically imposing this season, thanks to a group of 6-foot-4 forwards that includes Michael Rogers, Paul McCloney, Nick
Noyer and Silvio Arie-Lisboa. "We're bigger than we've been," said McCarthy, "but that's like telling those munchkins in the Wizard of Oz that they're bigger than they've been." The quartet has
been so effective in the first few weeks of the season that McCloney and Noyer, who played at Oak Park High for coach Ed Chevalier, will begin seeing time on the perimeter to open more minutes for the entire group.
Arie-Lisboa and Noyer are shooting 86 percent and 57 percent from the field, respectively. "We're fortunate that the vast majority of the kids that we get are well coached (in high school)," said McCarthy.
"We certainly appreciate Nick's toughness. He really gives us a lot of energy and he's been real consistent for us." Rogers, the 2005 Simi Valley High graduate, missed the past two seasons with a
degenerative eye condition called "keratoconus." He's returned to the team after surgeries to replace both corneas. "It's been a remarkable journey for the kid," said McCarthy. Now begoggled,
Rogers will make his first collegiate start Friday against No. 6 Antelope Valley. "We would have been a state team (in 2006) if Mike could play," said Burris. "I'm real happy to have him back."
Other interesting Raiders include 6-foot-3 guard Curry McKinney, who was 5-11 when he graduated from Simi Valley two years ago, and 6-foot guard Ian Walberg, the unselfish son of Pepperdine coach Vance Walberg, the
architect of the press-and-shoot system. Nash and freshmen Braylin Bowman and Kyle Elliott have been playing the key defensive "controller" position. "It's about us getting the freshmen rolling with
this press," said Burris.
