by Thorton Wilder Thornton Wilder's "The Skin of Our Teeth" is a classic American comedy that has managed to retain its relevance. Wilder admitted that this play "mostly comes alive under conditions of crisis," and our recent economic upheaval provides the crisis that makes it hit home today. Worried about climate change, faced with rebuilding our economy, hoping for the end of war, We are the Antrobus family. In the recent past, Wilder's rosy tone has met with some cynicism, but it takes an element of hope to rebuild after a catastrophe. Today's audience will appreciate his touch of Vaudeville, which provokes just enough laughter to ease those haunting thoughts that make us inquire into our own reasons for being. The play does what modern theatre is meant to do - entertain and provoke thought. Like the Antrobuses, we must stoke the fires to save higher civilization, as well as ourselves. That's exactly what Wilder does in The Skin of Our Teeth. |

HELD OVER BY POPULAR DEMAND! Set.
10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 @ 8:00pm "Yee Haw!... a rip-roarin' love story! . The actors create fine ensemble work." - The Moorpark Acorn "Nice
People Dancing to Good Country Music" This heart-warming comedy balances the struggles of running a bar in Houston while navigating the pit-falls of a blended family. Eva June has left her husband in Minnesota to run a bar in Texas with Jim. But Jim gets more than he bargained for when Jason, Eva June's 15 year-old son, and Catherine, Eva's niece who has recently been sent on "retreat," come to visit for the summer. Add to the mix Roy, the amorous local cowboy determined to get a dance with Catherine "even if she is an ex-nun," and you've got an explosive situation. "This show has a little something for everyone," says director John Loprieno, "slap-stick comedy, a budding romance between an ex-nun and a young cowboy and, of course, nice people dancing." Presented in a thrust setting in the Studio Theatre, this production offers many challenges for Moorpark College students. According to Loprieno, "We had such a great run this summer that we just couldn't let this one go, so we're bringing it back for a limited run this Fall. It's a rare opportunity to see the our students in action this early in the semester. Many thanks to the Drama Club for helping us make this happen!" |
