Academic & Disability Counseling
Taking college classes
without a Student Education Plan is like starting on a journey without
a goal or a map …it's easy to get lost.
The Academic Counselor
is your guide through the maze of pre-requisites, competencies,
and degree requirements. ACCESS students are welcome to use any
counselor at Moorpark College, but it is suggested that students
with special needs meet with the ACCESS Academic Counselor/Specialist.
Ideally this meeting should take place before or during the student's
first semester, and as needed throughout the student's academic
career.
The ACCESS Academic Counselor/Specialist
will help you develop a Student Education Plan… your "road
map"… that considers your strengths and needs and gives the
best course continuum and time frame for your individual educational
journey. Students will use this plan as they choose classes and
complete a Student Educational Contract each semester.
In some circumstances,
because of a specific disability, a student may be unable to complete
degree, pre-requisite, certificate, or full-time status requirements
in the same way as other students. In this situation, the student
should discuss alternatives and options with the Academic Counselor/
Specialist.
Disability Counselors
and Specialists are available by appointment, or on a "drop-by"
basis, to discuss your special needs as they relate to your disability…
or to help you determine if you have disability related needs. If
you need to adjust your accommodations, discuss accommodation options,
or you just want to talk about your academic needs or disability
concerns, be sure to stop by the ACCESS Center. A Department of
Rehabilitation Counselor is also available by appointment.
Call 378-1461 or drop
by the ACCESS Center to make an appointment… and "beat the
rush" …appointments fill up quickly towards the end of each
semester.
