The History of Moorpark College Athletics, so far

Welcome to Moorpark College Athletics!.

We provide a quality program of intercollegiate athletic programs that will challenge your skills and prepare you to transfer to a four-year college or university program. Our college has the highest transfer rate for community colleges in Ventura County. We are ranked 2nd in the state for community college transfers to the four-year colleges.

The Athletic Department is also proud of their Athletes and the Scholastic Achievements over the last 15 years:

Moorpark College belongs to the very competitive Western State Conference and the California League of Community Colleges Commission on Athletics (COA). We abide by all the conference constitution bylaws and sports supplements, as well as the COA Constitution.

Our athletes are offered opportunities to participate in 16 men's and women's intercollegiate sports.

Moorpark College provides a complete support system for the athlete including a full time athletic counselor, two athletic trainers, two equipment managers, tutorial programs, financial aid program and complete indoor and outdoor facilities.

    The Athletic facilities include:

Moorpark College has a tradition of winning. We have won 121 Western State Conference Championships with 9 WSC Supremacy Awards, and 9 California Community College Championships. These successes include: Baseball (4); Men's Basketball (7),Final 4-3 times; Women's Basketball (6); Men's Cross Country (13), with 2 state titles and 1 second in state; Women's Cross Country (6); Football (11), with 16 bowl games; Men's Soccer (2), with 1-2nd in state; Women's Soccer (3), with 1 state title; Softball(14), with a 3rd and a 5th in state; Women's tennis (1); Men's Track & Field (12), State Champions '03, 2 time runner-ups; Women's Track and Field (9) with 2nd 3 times and 1 third in State; Women's Volleyball (6)with a 4th & 5th place in the State; Wrestling(22), with 5 state titles, 2nd-2 times; Men's Golf (7), with 1 state title, a 3rd,&4th 2 times and 5th 2 times; and Men's Tennis (1); Women's Golf (0) new sport in 2000; Men's Volleyball (1), State Champions, 2005, new sport in 2002.

Pepsi Scholar Athlete of the Year Award given to Moorpark College's Mary Hanley. The Commission on Athletics Awards Committee is proud to announce that Moorpark College's Mary Hanley is the female recipient of the 2006 Pepsi Scholar Athlete Award. Also, the 2006 Women's Track & Field team was named to the Scholar Team honor roll. Hanley, along with the her teammates, will be honored at the Pepsi Celebration of Student Athletes Luncheon, at the 10th Annual COA Convention, on Thursday, April 5, at the Doubletree Ontario Airport Hotel in Ontario, CA.

The Pepsi Scholar Athlete Award is the highest student achievement honor awarded annually by the COA. The winners, along with the rest of the annual honor roll, are selected by the COA Awards Committee from nominations made by community colleges throughout California. Candidates for the Pepsi Scholar Athlete Award must carry a minimum GPA of 3.5 and must also show outstanding leadership as an athlete, student, or in other college and community activities, as well as have participated in two seasons of sport at a California community college. The Scholar Team Award is the highest academic team achievement given annually by the COA. All team members must have excelled academically with a total GPA of 3.0 or higher. The team should have demonstrated better than average accomplishments in intercollegiate athletic competition.

coa_mary_hanleyMary Hanley was a two-year star on the Moorpark College track and field team, qualifying for the COA California Community College Championships in 2005 and 2006 in both the hammer and discus events. She helped the Raiders to a second-place finish at the championships in 2006 by placing 5th in hammer and 7th in discus at the state event. She was named to the All-Western State Conference second-team in hammer and received honorable mention in discus. Hanley's best marks include an impressive 152 -0 in the hammer, a 146-5 in the discus, and a 40-5 in the shot put. She was named the Moorpark College Athlete of the Year in 2006.

In the classroom, Hanley maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA as she tackled courses such as micro and macroeconomics, and calculus with analytic geometry. In 2006, she received the Moorpark College Dean's Scholarship, Associated Student's Scholarship, and the Jason Raufman Memorial Scholarship. Teachers often refer to her as a "jewel" in the classroom referencing her excellent presence and politeness. Combining her interest in business with her athletic talents, Hanley established the Moorpark Track and Field club and was involved in several community service activities.

She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma, a service-oriented honor society. She was a member of Project Concern, a group that assists students in need of food and clothing, and she served as a part-
time helper at the Redwood Middle School autism program. She also shared her academic skills as a math tutor for elementary and middle school children.

Hanley is currently attending the University of California, Los Angeles, majoring in economics and competing on the UCLA track and field team.
